Most Factories Are Great Builders \u2014 Not Racket Testers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"2039\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one thing many new brands and club clients don\u2019t realise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"7561\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In most Chinese factories, the \u201cdevelopment team\u201d almost NEVER plays padel themselves.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1b9c\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you look at typical China factory culture, people are working 6\u20137 days a week, from morning till night, with very little leisure time. The factory KPIs are naturally focused on things that can be measured: producing more units, lowering scrap rate, reducing cost, passing impact tests and lab tests. On-court performance and \u201cfeel\u201d don\u2019t have a simple, standardized indicator, so they are not where most of the time and budget are invested. In this context, R&amp;D usually means&nbsp;<strong>process and tooling engineering<\/strong>, not&nbsp;<strong>playability and feel for different types of players<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6045\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most factories are very good at&nbsp;<strong>manufacturing<\/strong>, but honestly they have almost&nbsp;<strong>no language for \u201cfeel\u201d<\/strong>. They don\u2019t really talk about sweet spot, dwell time or comfort on court. For them, a racket is \u201cgood\u201d if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"4060\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For them, a racket is \u201cgood\u201d if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\" wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">It passes impact \/ bombing tests without cracking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">There is no delamination<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Weight and balance are inside tolerance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Paint and drilling hole looks clean<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"7fb5\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that still tells you nothing about questions like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\" wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">\u201cDoes this construction actually feel stiffer or softer than another one?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u201cIs this EVA + layup combo really helping my target player, or not?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"b1bc\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why, when you work with a factory, you can\u2019t just ask them which racket \u201cfeels better\u201d. You need to tell them clearly the target&nbsp;<strong>weight and balance<\/strong>, the&nbsp;<strong>EVA hardness range<\/strong>&nbsp;you want to use, and the&nbsp;<strong>materials \/ layup direction<\/strong>&nbsp;you want to try \u2014 and then confirm everything through real play tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"4e24\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s exactly why having an OEM partner who understands both&nbsp;<strong>factory<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>on-court feel<\/strong>&nbsp;becomes so important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"af36\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My own work often sits in the middle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\" wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">I translate brand language (\u201cmore control, but not dead\u201d) into\u00a0<strong>real specs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">We build samples.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Then I (and\/or players) actually\u00a0<strong>test them on court<\/strong>\u00a0and send structured feedback back to the factory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"f8e3\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The factory manufactures.<br>The brand (with the help of someone who plays and understands structure) defines what \u201cgood\u201d feels like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"b2e2\">2. Step One \u2014 Start from a Real Player Profile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3e48\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before talking about specs, you need to define&nbsp;<strong>who this racket is for<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"bfb5\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s a simple framework you can copy directly into your brief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"290a\">2.1 Level<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"e4d0\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be concrete:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\" wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Beginner \/ recreational.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Lower intermediate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Strong intermediate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Advanced \/ tournament player<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"667b\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Example: \u201cThis model is for&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>strong intermediate<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;players in local leagues.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"88a4\">2.2 Playing style<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"62a6\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How do they like to win points?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\" wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">More\u00a0<strong>defensive \/ control<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 lobs, blocks, smart positioning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">More\u00a0<strong>aggressive \/ attacking<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 smashes, viboras, overheads<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>All-round<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 can defend and finish points when needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"89e5\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Example: \u201cThey are&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>all-round players<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;who build the point with control and finish when they get a good ball.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"715a\">2.3 Physical profile &amp; comfort<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"48bc\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This part is almost never mentioned, but extremely important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\" wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Do they have a history of\u00a0<strong>elbow \/ shoulder \/ wrist<\/strong>\u00a0issues?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">How many hours per week do they play?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Do you want a\u00a0<strong>forgiving, comfortable<\/strong>\u00a0racket, or is it okay if it\u2019s a bit demanding?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"a51f\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Example: \u201cMany of them play&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>3\u20134 times per week<\/em><\/strong><em>, so comfort matters. We want to avoid elbow problems.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5af5\">2.4 Market positioning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\" wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Is this your\u00a0<strong>entry model<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>flagship all-round<\/strong>, or\u00a0<strong>top attacking<\/strong>\u00a0racket?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Which price segment are you aiming at (roughly)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"5944\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Example: \u201cThis is our&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>core all-round model<\/em><\/strong><em>, mid-high price range. It should be a \u2018safe choice\u2019 for most club players.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"fc52\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you write this down, the technical choices become much easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4613\">3. Step Two \u2014 Translate Player Profile into Specs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ada9\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s use that example profile and see how it becomes concrete specs your OEM can work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"ca31\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Target: strong intermediate, all-round style, plays 3\u20134 times\/week, comfort is important, mid-high price all-round model.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dc1c\">3.1 Shape<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\" wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Round<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192 bigger sweet spot, more forgiveness, more control<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Teardrop<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192 balance between control and power<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Diamond<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192 more head-heavy, smaller sweet spot, more aggressive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"659e\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For our player:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"e507\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u2705 A&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>teardrop<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;or round-teardrop shape: still forgiving, but with extra kick when attacking.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1b83\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How to write it in the brief:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"2ba5\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cShape:&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>teardrop (not extreme)<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;\u2014 we want an all-round frame with a generous sweet spot and enough power for smashes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5f3b\">3.2 Weight &amp; Balance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"9fb7\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two rackets can both say \u201c365 g\u201d but feel completely different because of&nbsp;<strong>balance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\" wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Head-light<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192 faster, easier to maneuver<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Even<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192 neutral<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Head-heavy<\/strong>\u00a0\u2192 more power, but more demanding on the arm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"51ac\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For club players who play often:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\" wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Weight: ~<strong>355\u2013365 g<\/strong>\u00a0is usually safe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Balance:\u00a0<strong>even or slightly head-heavy<\/strong>, but not a hammer. (I\u2019ll suggest 260mm balance)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"5693\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Brief example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"aeab\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cTarget weight:&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>355\u2013365 g<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;(including overgrip, without plastic).<br>Balance:&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>260mm\u2013even to slightly head-heavy<\/em><\/strong><em>, but should not feel tiring after 2 hours of play.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"7617\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adding \u201cincluding overgrip \/ without plastic\u201d sounds small, but it avoids a lot of confusion later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6f17\">3.3 EVA Hardness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1335\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In marketing, you say\u00a0<strong>soft \/ medium \/ hard<\/strong>.<br>In the factory, we work with\u00a0<strong>measured hardness<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 and small changes matter.<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/plans?source=upgrade_membership---post_li_non_moc_upsell--84b12415aa88---------------------------------------\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"b11d\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this target player:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"95a0\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u2705&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>Medium EVA on the softer side<\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;\u2014 protects the arm, still gives a responsive feel.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"e9f4\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Brief example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"ea80\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cEVA:&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>medium<\/em><\/strong><em>, slightly on the soft side. We want good comfort and shock absorption, but not a very mushy soft feeling.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"7fe2\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have a reference racket that you like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"a310\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe like the impact feel of [Brand X Model Y]. You don\u2019t need to design every single layer yourself. It\u2019s usually enough to describe&nbsp;<strong>what you want to feel on court<\/strong>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<strong>general direction<\/strong>&nbsp;(for example: \u201chybrid face, slightly softer feel, not a pro-tour stiffness\u201d), and then let the factory engineering team propose specific constructions. Unless you have a middle person like me in between \u2014 someone who understands both marketing language and engineering language \u2014 this part usually works like: the brand decides the&nbsp;<strong>face material from a marketing angle<\/strong>&nbsp;(full carbon, hybrid, etc.), and the factory takes care of the detailed stacking to make it manufacturable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"332c\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Brief example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"a190\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cFace: Carbon or carbon + glass hybrid, but we don\u2019t want a very stiff, \u2018pro-only\u2019 feeling. The impact should feel controlled and comfortable, with enough rebound for fast play.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"f134\">3.5 Surface &amp; Spin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"d027\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surface affects both&nbsp;<strong>spin<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>how hard the racket feels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\" wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Smooth clear coat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Light rough \/ micro-texture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Heavy sand \/ very rough texture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">3D pattern<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6c2d\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For club players:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"b6a4\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u2705 Light to medium roughness is often a good balance.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"2bc4\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Brief example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"c22e\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cSurface: Light to medium roughness sand coat + 3D pattern decal for spin, with good durability. We don\u2019t want an extremely aggressive sand that disappears after a short time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"f3b4\">3.6 Tolerances<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"78a5\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where you show your factory that you understand production reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"4c92\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\" wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">\u201cWeight tolerance: \u00b110 g\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">\u201cBalance tolerance: \u00b110 mm\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"5d68\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This helps the factory make the right decisions when something must be adjusted in production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"76b1\">4. If the brief at the beginning is unclear, you are basically burning time and money repeating that cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Factory R&amp;D thinks in engineering, not in playing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other side, most factory \u201cR&amp;D\u201d people don\u2019t actually play padel. Their mindset is naturally engineering-driven:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Stable process<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Low scrap rate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Safe constructions that pass impact tests<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Good cosmetic quality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a gap between <strong>engineering thinking<\/strong> and <strong>on-court thinking<\/strong>.
